Black screen. 0:00. No thumbnail. After Disk Drill or similar, that’s a very common leftover. Not proof the footage was overwritten.

How it works for camera operators

This is common after card recovery, and easy not to recognise. The file comes back large, so it feels like the clip is safe. Then you press play:
- VLC shows a black screen
- Timeline stuck at 0:00
- Windows shows a generic icon: no thumbnail
- Premiere / DaVinci won't import it
Your video is probably still inside the file. Recovery tools often restore the picture data but break the small "index" that tells players where each frame lives. A bit like having a book's pages but no table of contents.
We fix that one problem: the missing index

What the app actually repairs
Same symptom. Two technical jobs.
Both look like a huge recovered MP4 that will not play. Scan picks the path. You do not have to know which one you have.
Index is still in the file
Common after Disk Drill, PhotoRec, Recuva, or EaseUS. The recovered MP4 or MOV is large, but players cannot start it: the index is buried inside the file, or the frame map points at the wrong bytes.

Index was never written
The recording stopped, or recovery carved raw H.264 frames with no index. The pictures are in the file. The camera settings a player needs to start the stream are not.
- Needs one file that already plays: same camera, fps, resolution, H.264
- Not HEVC / H.265. Not a phone or drone clip
- Copy those settings, rebuild a new index from the frames
- Sony XAVC: PCM audio is restored from the broken file, not from the working clip

ReIndex does not pull deleted files off a card. That is Disk Drill / PhotoRec. It does not repair HEVC phone or drone clips, or files where the video data is gone.

Once you have the app
- Unzip the download Extract the folder to Desktop or Documents. Do not run the exe from inside the zip preview window.
- Let Windows open it Right-click ReIndexVideo.exe → Properties → tick Unblock → Apply. Double-click. If you get a blue “Windows protected your PC” screen, click More info, then Run anyway.
- The repair app opens in your browser It should open http://127.0.0.1:8787 on this PC. That is the app, not the public website. You will see a blue bar: “Repair app on this PC”.
- Add the recovered file (free) Click Add, pick the Disk Drill / PhotoRec MP4 that looks huge but will not play. Then click Scan. No account. No payment yet.
- Pay only if you want to repair If the scan looks good, buy a key on this website (£12 / £29 / £49). Copy the RJVID-… key from the thank-you page. In the app, paste it under Pay / license → Activate, then Repair and Save.
Windows blocked ReIndexVideo.exe? (no Microsoft certificate yet)
ReIndex is not code-signed. Windows will say unknown publisher. That is normal for a small indie app, not proof of malware. The app only runs on your PC. Footage is never uploaded.
Do this in order:
- Browser download bar: Edge/Chrome may hide the zip. Click the ↑ arrow → Keep → Keep anyway.
- Unzip first: Extract the folder to Desktop or Documents. Don’t double-click the exe from inside the zip preview.
- Unblock the file: Right-click ReIndexVideo.exe → Properties. At the bottom, tick Unblock → Apply → OK.
- SmartScreen blue screen: Double-click the exe. Click the small More info link (lower left), then Run anyway.
Still stuck? In the unzipped folder click the path bar, type cmd, press Enter, then type ReIndexVideo.exe and press Enter.
A proper Microsoft/DigiCert code-signing certificate removes this warning. We have not bought one yet. Until then, Unblock + More info → Run anyway is the safe way customers open the app.

What to add: the recovered file that will not play, not a clip that already works. After Scan you will see if the index is still inside (no extra clip) or if one working H.264 clip from the same camera is needed. Scan is free.
Step 2: Scan results
We look for a buried index first. If that is there, repair needs no extra clip. If the pictures are in the file but the index was never written, the next step asks for one working H.264 clip from the same camera. Deep scan gives a more exact recovery %.
Step 3: Working clip, only if the scan asked
Scan first. If the index is still inside the recovered file, skip this. If the index was never written, we copy H.264 codec settings (SPS/PPS) from one file that already plays.
Not the broken file again
The pictures are in the recovered file. The codec settings are missing. Add one clip that already plays, recorded on the same camera in the same mode.
Must match. This is what the repair actually uses.

- ✓ Same frame rate. Check VLC: Tools, Codec Information. 25fps and 50fps are not interchangeable
- ✓ Same resolution (4K vs 1080p must match)
- ✓ H.264. Sony XAVC-I is High 4:2:2 10-bit. Not 8-bit Main, not HEVC / H.265
A later take from the same shoot works. So does a file you already repaired from this camera. Duration and filename do not need to match. Audio on Sony XAVC is restored from the broken file, not from this clip.
Do not use phone footage, drone HEVC, or a 50fps clip for a 25fps shoot. That fails the match check.

Can ReIndex save my recovered footage?

Is ReIndex a Disk Drill alternative?

Can ReIndex repair a wedding video recovered with Disk Drill?

Is my video actually gone?
Often no. If the recovered file is large but play shows nothing, the pictures are frequently still inside. It just feels gone because the player can't find them. That's the issue ReIndex is built for.
Why won't Disk Drill files play?
Recovery restored the video bytes but broke or omitted the tiny index. The file looks complete. Press play and you get a black screen or 0:00.
Is my footage uploaded anywhere?
No. ReIndex runs on your PC. Your files never leave your computer.
What exactly does ReIndex repair?
Two index jobs, same “large file, will not play” symptom. If the index is still inside but buried or pointed at the wrong bytes, we patch it. No extra clip. If the index was never written, we copy H.264 settings from one working clip from the same camera, rebuild the index, and on Sony XAVC restore PCM audio from the broken file. Scan decides. We do not recover files off a card, and we do not fix overwritten or HEVC phone footage. See both repair paths.
Do I need a reference clip?
Scan first. Many recovered files still have an index buried inside, so ReIndex rebuilds that and you never add another video. You only need a working clip if the scan says the index was never written. Then pick one file that already plays, from the same camera, same fps, same resolution, H.264. Sony XAVC-I is High 4:2:2 10-bit, not 8-bit Main, not HEVC/H.265. Check those numbers in VLC: Tools, Codec Information. Duration and filename do not matter. A later take from the same shoot, or a file you already repaired from this camera, is ideal.
What file types does ReIndex repair?
Recovered MP4 and MOV video. Including Sony XAVC. Not photos or audio-only files.

Who built this?
Jake Norton. A company videographer recovered MP4 files with Disk Drill. They looked huge and complete, then VLC was a black screen at 0:00: the index was missing. The shooter did not trust that the footage could come back. Jake spent long nights rebuilding that index until the recovered video played. Same leftover after PhotoRec or Recuva. I’m worried about paying before I know it works
That is the same distrust this app came from. Scan is free in the Windows app. If you’ve got a lot of recovered files and still don’t want to buy a key yet, WhatsApp Jake. He may test one clip as a trial run. Not a guarantee on every file.
What if ReIndex can't fix my file?

Recovered DJI or drone video won't play — can ReIndex fix it?
Often yes when PhotoRec, Disk Drill, or Recuva already carved a large H.264 MP4/MOV off the card and every player fails (black screen, 0:00, “not a movie file”). That is usually a missing or broken index — the same job as a wedding leftover. HEVC / H.265 drone files (common on newer DJI modes) are not supported yet. Scan free in the Windows app; nothing uploads. Not affiliated with DJI.
GoPro, Canon, or Nikon recovered MP4 won't open?
Same pattern: recovery got the bytes, the index did not survive. Generic file000xxx.mp4 names from PhotoRec are normal. ReIndex rebuilds the index for recovered H.264 MP4/MOV on your PC. Sony XAVC (A7, FX, FS) is a proven path including PCM audio. Check codec in VLC → Tools → Codec Information before you pay.
QuickTime -2048 or Windows Media Player “problem playing the file”?
Those errors often mean the container index is missing or invalid after recovery — especially when the file is still huge. ReIndex targets that. If repair succeeds, play in VLC or Premiere first; Sony XAVC masters may still fail in WMP even when fixed (codec limit, not corruption). Scan is free.
Is ReIndex like Fix.Video or other upload-and-repair sites?
Similar symptom (broken MP4/MOV), different model. Services like Fix.Video repair online after you upload. ReIndex is a Windows app: scan and repair on your PC, wedding and client footage never leave your machine. Do you support HEVC / H.265 (phone, drone, 10-bit HEVC)?
Not in the automatic app yet. Today: recovered H.264 MP4/MOV including Sony XAVC. If scan finds H.265/HEVC (DJI, phone), the app links you to Jake on WhatsApp — he'll try a personal fix, same ballpark as the app (£12–£49), only if it plays. ProRes/MXF still out of scope.

You get a refund if
- You paid and the automatic repair failed: no playable file came out.
- You were charged twice, or billed by mistake.
- You bought a license, have not used any repair credits, and you ask within 14 days.
You don’t get a refund if
- The repair worked (the file plays) and you changed your mind.
- You don’t like the original camera quality. ReIndex rebuilds the index; it does not re-encode or improve the picture.
- A bespoke / custom look was quoted separately (those terms are in the quote).
