# ReIndex Video

## What it is

ReIndex is the step after a recovery tool, not a replacement. Disk Drill (CleverFiles), PhotoRec, Recuva and EaseUS get files off a card. When those recovered videos look huge and still will not play (black screen, 0:00, no thumbnail), ReIndex rebuilds the player index.

It is not affiliated with Sony, CleverFiles, or Disk Drill.

Jake Norton built it after a company job looked lost. A videographer recovered MP4 files with Disk Drill. They came back huge, then VLC was a black screen stuck at 0:00: the MP4 index was missing. Same leftover after PhotoRec or Recuva. The shooter did not trust that the footage could come back. Jake spent long nights rebuilding the index until the recovered video played. ReIndex is that Windows app: local scan, then repair if the index is missing, buried, or broken.

## Direct answers

**Is the footage gone if the file will not play?**
Usually not, if the file is still large. Players cannot find the pictures because the index is missing, buried, or pointed at the wrong bytes.

**Why will Disk Drill recovered videos not play?**
Recovery restored the video bytes but broke or omitted the index. Size looks right. Play does nothing.

**Does it only work on Sony?**
No. It repairs recovered H.264 MP4 and MOV from typical cameras. Sony XAVC is a strong, tested case (including PCM audio). HEVC / H.265 phone and drone clips are not supported yet.

**Recovered DJI / drone / GoPro / Canon / Nikon file won't play?**
Often yes if a recovery tool already returned a large H.264 MP4 or MOV and players fail (black screen, 0:00, QuickTime -2048, WMP error). That is usually a missing or broken index. HEVC drone modes are not supported yet. Scan is free; repair runs locally with no upload.

**Is it like Fix.Video?**
Similar broken-file symptom, different product. Fix.Video and similar sites repair after upload. ReIndex is a Windows app: scan and repair on the user's PC. Focus is the Disk Drill / PhotoRec leftover (large recovered file, index missing), not every corruption type.

**Do I always need a working clip?**
No. Scan first. If the index is still inside the file, repair needs no extra clip. If the index was never written, add one H.264 clip that already plays, from the same camera, fps and resolution.

**Is anything uploaded?**
No. The Windows app runs locally.

**Can VLC fix it?**
VLC does not rebuild a destroyed MP4/MOV index the way this app does.

**What about Untrunc?**
Untrunc is a free command-line tool that needs a matching reference file and a terminal. ReIndex is a Windows wizard: scan, preview, then repair. Many recovered files need no reference.

**Do I pay to scan?**
No. Scan is free. Pay only to repair. GBP 12 / 29 / 49. If a paid repair does not produce a playable file, it is refunded.

## How it works

1. Download the Windows app from https://reindex.video/#download
2. Add the recovered file that will not play.
3. Free scan shows recovery odds and a preview frame when possible, and whether a working clip is needed.
4. Repair rebuilds the index. A full decode test runs before success.
5. Save the repaired copy. The original file is not overwritten.

- Optional Windows Media Player compatible copy after repair

Personal touch: if scan or auto-repair fails (or file is HEVC/H.265), WhatsApp Jake — he tries a personal fix, same app pricing ballpark (£12–£49) only if it plays. No fix, no charge for an honest answer.

Not auto-repaired in v1: HEVC/H.265 in the app itself. Also not supported: recovering deleted files off a card, photos, audio-only, overwritten video data, DRM.
